Jose Ignacio Barraquer Moner, belonged to an illustrious family of physicians and ophthalmologists started by his grandfather, José Antonio Barraquer Roviralta and continued by his father, Ignacio Barraquer. Barraquer is a Dynasty immortalized in the history of medicine and ophthalmology already today for four generations dedicated to eye health care.
Professor Barraquer initiated his education with his father and then finished his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Madrid in 1952, reaching the specialty of Ophthalmology Barraquer Institute in Barcelona, where he was Vice President and Head of Specialization until 1954; by that time decided to leave the Barraquer Institute to move to the city of Bogotá which assume the challenge to create a new center to continue the research mission of the Barraquer.
He stood out as an investigator in the technologies of refractive surgery, a term that he introduced himself in 1949. In 1958 he published a method for lamellar grafts frozen corneas and in 1963 completed its work of keratophakia. This is just a small sample of twenty original techniques that Professor Barraquer, was able to devise. In addition, the eminent ophthalmologist managed to invent instruments and auxiliary scanning methods, precise and accurate for the implementation of these techniques. The surgical microscope, surgical keratometer and the microkeratome, or the “crio-torno”, are some of his brilliant creations, and with the others, totalled at least forty instruments.
His research in the field of Ophthalmology is innumerable: at least 256 publications, among which his book "refractive Keratoplasty." All their efforts and work have been exalted through various recognitions and awards including: Honorary Award Cryo -Ophthalmology Society of the United States, the Prize of the Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology, Doctor Honoris Causa of the University Santa Maria (Brazil), Catalan of the Year in 1970, Member of Merit of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Barcelona and holder of the Keys of the City of Miami, among many others.
But surely one of the greatest contributions of Jose Ignacio Barraquer Moner was laying the foundations of CLÍNICA BARRAQUER and AMERICAN BARRAQUER INSTITUTE two organizations dedicated to the care of human vision.
